74-Year-Old Truck Driver Killed in Tractor-Trailer Rollover on Idaho’s I-84

A fatal truck crash on Interstate 84 east of Boise, Idaho, claimed the life of a 74-year-old driver from Reno, Nevada, early Monday, October 12. The tractor-trailer left the eastbound roadway and overturned in Ada County, according to Idaho State Police.

The single-vehicle incident occurred at approximately 3:08 a.m. near milepost 62. The driver was behind the wheel of a 2024 International semi-truck hauling a trailer when the vehicle veered off the highway, traveled a short distance along an embankment and overturned.

Emergency responders transported the driver by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Police reported that he was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred. His identity had not been released in the initial police report.

The wreck forced the closure of the right eastbound lane for approximately three hours as emergency crews attended the scene and investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the rollover. Authorities have yet to establish why the truck left the roadway, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Interstate 84 serves as a major east-west freight artery linking Idaho with Oregon and Utah. The route is an important part of the commercial trucking network across the Pacific Northwest and the Intermountain West, making incidents along the corridor a concern for freight operators and road safety officials.

Large truck crashes remain a major challenge to road safety

The Idaho crash comes amid ongoing concerns about fatal crashes involving large commercial vehicles nationwide. These events still claim thousands of lives each year, federal data show, but complete data for January through September 2026 is not yet available.

Preliminary data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Motor Carrier Management Information System, as of August 28, shows there were 1,607 fatal crashes involving large trucks nationwide in 2026, resulting in 1,768 deaths. The figures are based on the agency’s data as of that date and should not be considered the total for the first nine months of the year.

FMCSA’s database includes 3,784 fatal crashes involving large trucks and 4,209 fatalities for the calendar year 2025. The totals are also provisional and subject to revision as more information comes in.

Separate figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show 5,340 people were killed in crashes involving large trucks in 2024, down 2.5% from 2023. Some 70 percent of those killed were occupants of other vehicles, highlighting the danger these collisions pose to the commercial trucking industry and beyond.

Early 2026 numbers show fewer traffic deaths in Idaho

State level data is also useful in providing the context of the investigation. Preliminary data released Sept. 11 by the Idaho Transportation Department showed 150 traffic fatalities statewide in 2026 compared to 174 during the same time period in 2025. That figure includes all vehicle types, not just commercial trucks.

The leading contributing factors in fatal crashes in Idaho are not wearing a seat belt, impairment, inattention, speeding and lane departure.

It’s not yet known if any of those factors, other than the reported lack of a seat belt, contributed to Monday’s fatal rollover, investigators said. It’s unknown why the tractor-trailer left Interstate 84.

Seat belt use is still an important safety issue

The death highlights the consequences of a single-vehicle commercial truck crash and the importance of seat belt use among professional drivers. Authorities confirmed the driver was reportedly unrestrained, but no findings have been released establishing the full sequence of events or the cause of the rollover.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the vehicle to go off the highway.

Why it matters: “Wearing seat belts is a key road safety measure, but rollovers remain a significant risk for commercial drivers.” The Idaho event also shows the need to separate initial crash data from full-year statistics in analyzing national and state trucking safety trends.
