Hapag-Lloyd is taking a 25% stake in APM Terminals’ Maasvlakte II facility in Rotterdam, deepening its cooperation with Maersk through the Gemini Cooperation.
The investment comes as the terminal undergoes a major expansion and modernization programme aimed at increasing advanced container-handling capacity and reinforcing Maasvlakte II’s position as a key gateway for European trade.
APM Terminals keeps operational control
Despite the transaction, APM Terminals will retain operational control of the Rotterdam facility.
APM Terminals CEO Keith Svendsen said the investment reflects the continued operational cooperation between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd through the Gemini Cooperation, with both carriers focused on improving service reliability and efficiency for customers.
The terminal expansion is expected to further strengthen its role within the Gemini network and support the partners’ long-term shipping operations in Europe.
Hapag-Lloyd strengthens its terminal portfolio
For Hapag-Lloyd, the deal also fits into its broader strategy of expanding its portfolio of terminal assets in strategically important markets.
The German carrier said the investment will strengthen its position in Rotterdam, one of Europe’s most important maritime and logistics hubs.
The transaction gives Hapag-Lloyd a direct stake in critical terminal infrastructure while allowing APM Terminals to maintain operational responsibility for the facility.
The move further consolidates the relationship between the two carriers as the Gemini Cooperation continues to develop its network and terminal strategy.
